Recently my team became part of 1st Special Forces Unit ODA 203/GFT 7, as part of our assignment to this team we are having to train in different aspects of Special Forces skills. I am hoping to have my team train in the Navy SEALS form of run and gun. I wanted to inquire about what aspects I should concentrate on while training my team. I feel that this skill will be vital for our team, seeing as we are a guerilla force and being able to hit and run is one aspect of the GFT that I want to train on.
I looked around and from what I see, the Army and Marines do not seem to have a similar procedure of egressing while laying down heavy fire. It seems to be a skill only taught by the Navy SEALS.
I have included a video of what run and gun means, just in case
This "run and gun" tactic is actually a simple fall back with cover fire technique. Or even commonly referred to as Leap Frog. It can be conducted either forward or back ward. Things to note.
1. Every one falls back on a central line, Meaning, When they fall back from the line, they all fall back towards the center so as not to spread out,
2. The first man to fall back establishes every one else's firing positions. In this instance on the video they are online meaning 5 to 10 meter distance between each man on a horizontal line.
3. Controlled fire discipline. It may appear that they are just "spraying and praying" but in actuality they are laying down concentrated effective fire on target lanes. a target lane is basically a sweeping arc that over laps the man next to your's firing arc allowing fire to be placed forward on all incoming.
4. As each team member peels off the line, they slap the team member next to them to allow them to know they are moving and to get ready to move. You will notice as each team member moves, the others pick up the rate of fire. In this case, the last man moving is always a heavy weapons to allow maximum fire rate down range while the rest set up the next firing line. Once the firing line is establishes that last man peels off and the firing line immediately lays down suppressive fire.
5. It may look like chaos but it is a very practiced and trained manuever. Done by All branchs of the military not just the SEALs
How to train to do this maneuver?
First off you need to do individual marksmanship training, get your team able to hit targets from the ready position. I.E. Weapon held with the muzzle pointed at the ground. Target appears and they fire. Snap drills.
Once they are proficient in snap drills then you need to start working on fire and maneuver. Set up targets in an open field. have the team mates move to within 30 meters of a target kneel and fire three rounds, up and move to the next stand and three rounds, to the next prone and three rounds. etc etc. You NEVER fire and run at the same time. you are less effective in placing rounds on target while running. Stop. take a good stance. Cover and concealment.
Once your team is effective in this, put them online, and start peeling off. start from the middle and move back on a central line, each man slapping the next once the first man is in place he yells a go word, "GO! or UP!" anything works. But it has to be loud, once heard the next man goes then the next etc. start out slow, walk through the movements till your comfortable as a team. then speed it up.
Its all about practice practice practice. Training and being able to adapt to the terrain and situation. No formation or maneuver EVER holds up to an attack by the enemy, the key is to improvise adapt and over come. utilize the training you have and the knowledge you know.
small note, you mentioned guerrilla tactics. These Tactics are Hit and Run tactics which means. Hit the target then fall back. DO NOT engage for long periods of stand up fighting. Guerrilla tactics often are set up to hit large targets hard and fast then disappear. Its to create confusion, and large amounts of damage in a small amount of time.
This video is cool and all but this is usualy just use if they are spotted, outnumbered, need to fall back to a safe location, and regroup. The SEALs usaly are trained in the arts of stealth. Even the man carrying the biggest and loudest gun on the team should be able to pull of a knife kill with ease. Knife kills are alot harder in airsoft because the enemey is already on guard because they know that you will be coming sooner or later. The real SEALs have an advantage to this. they are dropped quietly in an area that may be guarded but the guards are probly tired of standing around all day every day and goof up. Theese are some tipps in obj. based games that will make you more like SEALs:
Attackers:
1) Be patient, don't rush in there let them get set up and they will probly be in uncomfortable positions and if you wait long enough then they will get bored and start moving and stretching giving their position away.
2) Observe, Find a location that is concealed enough that your position is not given away but has a good vantage point of the obj. this can help you plan your attack w/ minamal causualties on your team. If your section has a scout or a sniper then send him out on this mission as he should know this recon role well.
3) Movement, move slowly and low as this is a hard target to find and hit. Do not stick to main trails they may be easier to sneak on and travel on but the enemy probly has a guard on them.
4) Practice, Try having one man against many only with a knife and this will improve his kills.
Deffense: a good defense = good offense
1) Plan, Pick your two best players and leave them at the obj. and the rest go looking for a fight. All move as one andmove silently
2) Recon, Move slowly in a horozontal line twards the enemy's spawn point w/ a 5 meter spread between each soldier. Keep an eye on the environment5 and on each other because if you see some one freeze. everyone stops to see how many there are and if it's a small number try to force them into a surrender or knife them( surrounding them works better for surrender). If it is close to their whole team then every one pick a target and open up on them.
3) Fall back time, if they start to flank you or if they are hitting you to hard then use leap frog from left to right and keep it as a horozontal line to reduce flanking. do this until you are forced back to the obj. and then leapfrog into your last stand positions. Pick theese at the beggining of the match because if your trying to pick theese while getting shot at you'll lose.
4) Last Stand, This is where it ends, you no longer fallback and you must dig in. try to set up soldiers based on cappablities: Gunners and riflemen up front hold them back with over welming fire power, grenaiders in the middle using grenaides and 203s as mortars( also you shold have set up explosives around the base in the beggining) and setting of the explosives, and finaly the snipers in back laying down accurate suppresive fire.
Theese should help you become more like a SEAL. Also watch other videos about them and read book on them do you know every thing you can. Knowledge is power
